How to Quit Throwing Out Leftovers

If your family is anything like ours, your fridge has half a dozen containers of leftovers scattered throughout it. None of them are dated, some are really, grossly, old, and when lunchtime rolls around, you forget all about the good ones and eat bread and cheese.

Not only is wasting so much food unfrugal, it takes up space in the fridge. What can you do? We have a dry-drase whiteboard on our fridge, so one day I stuck a marker in the holder and announced that if anyone puts leftovers in the fridge, they must write the dish and the date on the board. And if you finish a container of leftovers, you have to erase it. Our whiteboard now has notes on it like, "Chicken quinoa 19/9" and "Sprout salad 21/9". (I think a magnetic notepad and pencil would work just as well.)

It works for us! Since the beginning of September, I think all we've had to throw out is some leftover gingersnap gravy. Now that is something!

What a great idea! I have been guilty of not managing the contents of my refrigerator. Accountability rules!

Good Idea!

great idea! I just use a blank calendar. I write in the meals for that day if there are leftovers and I know which leftovers to use first for hubby's lunch or for those of us at home. :)

Sonshine, that's a super idea as well. Thanks!

Great idea! I also throw our bread items in the freezer after 2 days, so then we can just pull out what we want and pop in the microwave. We usually eat leftovers most lunches. If we have just leftover meat like roast, chicken, etc., I throw those in the freezer unless I have already made up a plan for what to use it with.

You're welcome. :D

We may have to try this, we are on left-over-over-load right now.

This sounds like a much better idea than just counting all those gross containers as homeschool science projects! Thanks for sharing!

OMG, this is freakin' brilliant! I am going out and buying a white board over my lunch break. Why did I not think of this sooner?

Oh... my... gosh.
My favorite idea I've read today! I've already got a white board on my fridge that I could use for it, and I'm pretty sure this would be a better use for it than a potsticker recipe that I've got posted in about six other places. Haha.
I love it.

Great idea, I've got the whiteboard already! Our biggest problem is I'm the only one who eats the leftovers and I can't seem to get through them fast enough!

Whiteboard notes are definitely better than mold experiments. Right Jenny? ;D

I'm glad so many of you found this helpful. I can't believe it took me so long to come up with the idea!
